Dr. Varun Raju: Thank you. My story is rooted in perseverance and curiosity. Being the eighth child in a family of teachers, resources were limited, and I had to navigate schooling in Telugu medium. My first attempt at MBBS didn’t succeed as I hoped, but that setback taught me resilience. By 1988, I secured admission at Kurnool Medical College and completed my MBBS in 1994.
From there, I gravitated toward surgery because I was fascinated by its combination of science, skill, and immediate impact on human lives. Every stage-from registrar to consultant-was a learning curve. Over time, I realized that mastering surgery wasn’t enough; I wanted to create systems to train others, which eventually led to launching our laparoscopic fellowship in 2021.
TheCconnects: That fellowship has already trained over 2,500 surgeons in a short span. How did you scale training so effectively in such a complex field?
Dr. Varun Raju: Scale comes from focus and structure. We designed a concentrated four-month fellowship that emphasizes hands-on practice, simulation-based learning, and real-case exposure. By combining rigorous evaluation with mentorship, trainees gain competence quickly.
Also, feedback loops are critical. We continuously assess trainee performance, surgical outcomes, and even post-fellowship adoption of techniques. We overcame this through transparency and outcomes. We meticulously documented trainee progress, patient results, and complication rates. Over time, data proved the model’s effectiveness, and word-of-mouth referrals became our strongest validation.
