Welcome, Dr. Digambar Tayade. It’s an honor to have you with us today. You’ve had a remarkable career, a blend of rigorous civil engineering achievements, artistic endeavors, and social contributions. To begin, can you share with our readers a brief overview of your professional journey and how you evolved into the multifaceted personality you are today?
Dr. Digambar Tayade:
Thank you for having me. My journey began over three decades ago as a civil engineer with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority. I was fortunate to work on significant projects such as the Bandra Kurla Complex Commercial Hub and the reclamation and development of Mahim Creek, among many other infrastructure projects including stormwater drains, sewer systems, roads, and tunnels. Over the years, the challenges of constructing and rejuvenating urban spaces taught me not only about engineering but also about perseverance, teamwork, and constant innovation. After a fulfilling career in civil engineering, I embraced my passion for the arts, particularly singing, and have garnered several awards in karaoke and other creative pursuits. Balancing both my technical contributions and my artistic hobbies has been immensely rewarding.
TheCconnects:
It’s fascinating to hear how you navigated from the technical realm of civil engineering to the creative fields of music and art. Clearly, many forces have played a part in shaping your journey. Who would you say has influenced you the most, and in what way has that influence manifested in your work?
Dr. Digambar Tayade:
I must say that the unwavering support of my beloved wife, Shakuntala, has been paramount. Throughout my career, whether in tackling complex engineering projects or pursuing my passion for karaoke singing, her encouragement has helped me push through doubts and setbacks. Beyond personal support, various mentors and colleagues in both engineering and the arts have shown me that success comes from determination, continuous learning, and the courage to pursue what truly matters. Their guidance has shaped my professional values, teaching me to always seek excellence and innovation in every endeavor.

Your journey is truly inspiring. With such a diverse career, what would you identify as the biggest challenges you encountered, and how did you overcome them?
Dr. Digambar Tayade:
There were many challenges along the way. One of the most significant hurdles was managing the heavy responsibility of large-scale infrastructure projects, where even a small error could have vast repercussions. The tight deadlines, budget constraints, and environmental concerns were constant pressures. However, I learned the value of resilience and teamwork, surrounding myself with experts who complemented my skills. Later, transitioning to a creative pursuit like singing brought its own challenges. Some people found it surprising that a civil engineer could have an artistic side, but I embraced this duality and worked relentlessly to hone my talents in both fields. Balancing two distinct worlds required time management, perseverance, and a strong belief that passion must go hand in hand with diligence.
TheCconnects:
Your ability to balance two distinct careers is indeed commendable. Moving on, can you share some key lessons from your professional journey that might be of use to our readers, especially those venturing into demanding fields or industries?
Dr. Digambar Tayade:
Certainly. One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is the value of humility and continuous learning. Whether you’re an engineer or an artist, every day offers an opportunity to learn something new. I always advocate for embracing challenges as learning experiences rather than setbacks. Equally important is the need for strong collaboration. No great achievement is accomplished in isolation; it’s the collective effort of a dedicated team that brings a vision to life. I’ve also discovered that balancing pragmatism with passion is essential. While technical rigor and precision are fundamental in engineering, a spark of creativity can often lead to innovative solutions that benefit society at large.

That’s excellent advice. Now, as someone with firsthand experience in managing public infrastructure as well as digital and creative endeavors, what do you see as the biggest challenge for brands in the digital space today?
Dr. Digambar Tayade:
The digital space is evolving rapidly, and brands are constantly pressured to maintain authenticity amid an overwhelming amount of noise. In my view, one of the biggest challenges is creating genuine engagement. Digital audiences today are savvy; they are quick to identify insincerity. Brands must therefore strive to develop content that is authentic and meaningful. In my experience, whether in the context of urban development or digital content, it is critical to build trust and to offer real value. A successful brand must not only promote its products or services but also foster a community based on shared values. This requires a deep understanding of the audience, clear communication, and the ability to adapt to new technologies and trends.
TheCconnects:
Indeed, authenticity remains a cornerstone of successful engagement. Could you elaborate on how the solutions and initiatives you’ve led, both in civil projects and in your creative ventures, address the pain points of the communities and customers you serve?
Dr. Digambar Tayade:
In infrastructure projects, our solutions are always designed with the end-user in mind. For instance, when we worked on the Bandra Kurla Complex and Mahim Creek reclamation, our primary goal was to improve everyday living by ensuring efficient transportation, robust drainage systems, and sustainable urban spaces. These projects directly impacted the quality of life of thousands by creating safer, more reliable public spaces.
On the creative side, my endeavors in music and social work aim to provide platforms for expression and community building. Through my participation and awards in karaoke singing, I have been able to connect with diverse audiences, inspiring many to explore their own creative potentials. Moreover, my work with senior citizen welfare and social initiatives helps address broader societal challenges, ensuring that underrepresented voices are heard and valued.

It’s clear that your work spans both technical and humanitarian domains. When you’re not engaged in these projects or creative pursuits, how do you like to spend your free time?
Dr. Digambar Tayade:
I believe in maintaining a healthy balance in life. Outside of my professional commitments and social work, I love indulging in music, especially karaoke, which has been a lifelong passion. It’s not just a hobby but a way to relax and reconnect with my inner self. I also enjoy physical activities like athletics, a passion that goes way back to my college days when I excelled in high jump, pole vault, and even football. These activities keep me physically fit and mentally refreshed. Additionally, spending quality time with family, particularly sharing moments with my wife Shakuntala, enriches my personal life and gives me the energy to take on new challenges.
TheCconnects:
That sounds like a well-rounded and fulfilling lifestyle. Lastly, before we wrap up, do you have any advice for aspiring professionals and entrepreneurs who might be looking to make their mark in traditionally rigid or competitive fields?
Dr. Digambar Tayade:
My advice would be to remain true to yourself and embrace both your strengths and weaknesses. Whether you’re venturing into engineering, the arts, or any other field, remember that innovation often comes from unexpected intersections of disciplines. Don’t be afraid to pursue what excites you, even if it falls outside conventional norms. Invest in your education, both formal and experiential, and surround yourself with mentors who can offer guidance along the way. Most importantly, learn to view every setback as an opportunity to grow, and never underestimate the power of perseverance. With dedication and a willingness to learn, you can redefine what’s possible in your chosen field.
