Pandit Karan Sharma: Thank you for having me. My journey really began back in 2008 during my college days. I vividly remember one afternoon at a local Khadi restaurant, sharing tea and samosas with my friends. I noticed a group of young children, maybe around 8 to 10 years old, discarding leftover food that many of us would take for granted. In that moment, I realized how fortunate I was and that even small acts of kindness could make a huge difference. It was a turning point for me—a spark that lit the fire of social service which has guided my path ever since.
TheCconnects: That’s a powerful story. It seems that witnessing such everyday struggles truly shaped your outlook on life. Alongside that transformative moment, were there any individuals who deeply influenced your decision to dedicate yourself to community service?
Pandit Karan Sharma: Absolutely. Growing up, my family instilled in me the values of compassion and service. My grandfather, who was a farmer, always demonstrated that hard work and empathy go hand in hand. Later, my father, a renowned astrologer, also played a role by showing me the significance of aligning one’s life with a higher purpose. Their quiet strength and dedication taught me that helping others is not just a duty—it’s a calling.
TheCconnects: It’s clear that your family’s influence and those early life experiences have been instrumental. Moving into your political career, you’ve achieved some remarkable milestones, especially winning a council seat that had been a stronghold for decades. What were some of the challenges you encountered during this transition from social work to politics?
Pandit Karan Sharma: Transitioning from grassroots activism to the political arena was certainly challenging. For one, there was a lot of skepticism. People wondered if someone with a background in community service could handle the complexities of municipal governance. Moreover, winning a seat that had been under the control of another party for 25 years was not an easy feat. It required not only strategic planning but also building trust among the people. I overcame these challenges by staying true to my values, listening to the concerns of every community member, and ensuring that my actions consistently reflected my commitment to service. Regular public hearings and community meetings helped bridge the gap between policy and the people’s daily lives.
TheCconnects: Your approach to governance is quite refreshing, emphasizing direct engagement with the community. Could you tell us about some key initiatives you’ve implemented in your ward that have had a significant impact?
Pandit Karan Sharma: Certainly. In ward 134, we focused on essential infrastructural improvements—something that had been neglected for decades. For example, we got a cemented road built in Gandhinagar Quarters and asphalting work done in both Anita Colony and near the Gandhinagar Railway Station. These might sound like small projects, but they significantly improved daily life for residents. We also installed proper drainage systems, planted thousands of trees, and even implemented community loudspeakers in various colonies. These loudspeakers broadcast Hanuman Chalisa recitations twice daily, which not only reinforces cultural heritage but also brings a sense of unity and peace to the community.
TheCconnects: That blend of infrastructure development and cultural engagement is quite unique. You also seem to have a knack for mobilizing the youth. How important is youth involvement in your work, and what role do they play in your initiatives?
Pandit Karan Sharma: Youth are the heartbeat of any community, and their energy is both refreshing and essential for sustained development. I’ve always believed in engaging young people by giving them a platform to contribute actively. Whether it’s through organizing bike rallies, community meals, or participating in the Tiranga and Lord Shri Ram rallies, the youth have shown immense dedication. Their involvement not only supports our projects but also ensures that a spirit of service and community continues to thrive in the next generation.
TheCconnects: It sounds like you’re also quite innovative when it comes to addressing the needs of your constituents. How do you ensure that your policies and projects effectively alleviate the day-to-day challenges faced by the people in your community?
Pandit Karan Sharma: The key is constant dialogue and active listening. Every Monday, I host a public hearing where community members come forward to voice their concerns—be it infrastructural issues, sanitation, or even more personal struggles. These sessions are not just a formality; they are the backbone of our decision-making process. By engaging directly with the people, we can prioritize initiatives that address the most pressing issues. Furthermore, our approach is holistic. For instance, while road repairs are essential, we also focus on social welfare programs like providing blankets to the homeless during winter and organizing community meals for children and the needy. It’s about creating a network of support that touches every aspect of community life.
TheCconnects: Your hands-on approach certainly seems to yield tangible results. Shifting gears a bit, when you’re not busy transforming your community, how do you unwind? What do you do in your free time?
Pandit Karan Sharma: Despite a packed schedule, I always try to find time for reflection and rejuvenation. I enjoy reading extensively—books on history, spirituality, and modern governance often provide new insights. Additionally, I find solace in visiting temples and engaging in spiritual practices, particularly the Hanuman Chalisa. This not only grounds me but also inspires me to continue serving with a clear mind and a compassionate heart. And, of course, spending quality time with family is a priority whenever I can.
TheCconnects: It’s great to hear that you balance your demanding work with activities that nurture your spirit. With such a diverse range of experiences, what are some of the most important lessons you’ve learned throughout your professional journey?
Pandit Karan Sharma: One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is the power of empathy. Whether you’re dealing with infrastructural challenges or social issues, understanding and valuing the perspective of the people you serve is paramount. Additionally, persistence is key. Change doesn’t happen overnight—it requires consistent effort, patience, and sometimes, the courage to stand up against entrenched systems. Finally, I’ve learned that true leadership is about service, not power. The goal is to empower others, create opportunities, and foster a sense of community where everyone feels valued.
TheCconnects: Your insights are both profound and practical. Looking ahead, what do you see as the major challenges for leaders, especially in today’s increasingly digital and rapidly changing world?
Pandit Karan Sharma: In our digital age, one of the major challenges is bridging the digital divide. While technology offers immense potential to improve governance and community engagement, not everyone has equal access or the skills to benefit from it. Leaders must work to ensure that digital tools are inclusive, user-friendly, and accessible to all segments of society. Another challenge is maintaining authenticity and transparency in an era where misinformation can easily spread. It’s crucial to build trust through consistent, honest communication and by being present on both digital and physical platforms.

Don’t be afraid of challenges; see them as opportunities to learn and grow. Always listen to your community, be it your customers or the people you serve, and never lose sight of why you started. There’s also an exciting environmental initiative on the horizon—we’re looking to plant an additional 5,000 trees in urban pockets to further enhance green cover and combat pollution. These projects reflect our commitment to sustainable development and inclusive growth, and I’m excited to see them come to fruition.
