Dr. MAYOOR SHAH – Creative Director of Reflections Films, Author, Poet, Fashion Designer & Painter Exclusive Interview

TheCconnects: Welcome, Dr. Mayoor Shah. It’s an absolute pleasure to have you with us today. Your journey is nothing short of inspirational. To begin, could you share with our readers a bit about your professional journey and how you arrived at your current role as Creative Director at Reflections?

Mayoor Shah: Thank you so much for having me. My journey has been an exciting tapestry of diverse experiences, starting from a very young age. I was drawn to the arts early on, writing short stories and exploring fashion design as a teenager. My formal education in Political Science and Sociology at St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai, along with additional diplomas in Business Management, Hotel Management, and Textile Designing, gave me a broad perspective. I naturally gravitated towards visual storytelling, which eventually led me to the world of media and video production. My career started at Doordarshan, where I worked on Gujarati plays and later transitioned into producing popular programmes like WHATS THE GOOD WORLD and YOUNG WORLD.

Founding Reflections in 1985 was a pivotal moment; it allowed me to merge creativity with technology, especially when video production was still in its infancy. Today, I continue to oversee our creative endeavors, ensuring that every project reflects not just quality but also innovation.

TheCconnects: That’s truly remarkable, Mayoor. Your journey reflects a unique blend of creativity and entrepreneurial spirit. Who would you say has influenced you the most throughout your life, and what is it about their influence that resonates with you?

Mayoor Shah: I’ve been fortunate enough to cross paths with many inspiring individuals, but if I had to choose, I’d say my early mentor was the legendary Smt. Nargis Dutt. I still vividly recall the day of my first independent art exhibition, where she inaugurated my work. Her grace, insight, and commitment to the arts instilled in me a deep sense of purpose. Beyond her, my interactions with spiritual leaders like Swami Chinmayananda, Sri Ravi Shankar and Sri Sathya Sai Baba have enriched my perspective, encouraging me to look at life through a more compassionate and holistic lens. Their wisdom has guided me not just in my professional life, but also in my personal journey.

TheCconnects: It sounds like you have a well of inspiration to draw from. Speaking of challenges, every creative journey has its hurdles. Could you talk about some of the biggest challenges you’ve encountered and how you managed to overcome them?

Mayoor Shah: Absolutely, challenges are inevitable, and they have played a significant role in shaping my career. One of the biggest hurdles was adapting to new technology in an era when video production was still emerging. When I founded Reflections, editing and production processes were extremely manual and cumbersome. There were times when we had to innovate on the fly, using limited resources to deliver quality content. The key was to remain resilient and curious, learning continuously and not shying away from experimentation. Another challenge was navigating the volatile nature of the media industry. Economic shifts and changing consumer behaviors meant we had to constantly reinvent our strategies. I learned that embracing change and fostering a culture of adaptability within my team were crucial in overcoming these obstacles.

TheCconnects: Your ability to turn challenges into opportunities is truly commendable. Reflecting on your extensive career, what would you say are some of the most important lessons you’ve learned along the way?

Mayoor Shah: One critical lesson is that innovation is a continuous journey. Even after decades in the industry, I find that there’s always something new to learn or an uncharted avenue to explore. Another lesson is the value of collaboration. Creativity thrives in an environment where ideas can be shared freely, and every member of the team is encouraged to contribute. I’ve also learned that staying true to your vision is paramount, while feedback and market trends are important, authenticity should never be compromised. Finally, resilience is key. There will always be setbacks, but what matters is how you respond to them. A persistent, solution-oriented mindset can turn any challenge into a stepping stone for success.

TheCconnects: Speaking of authenticity, in today’s digital era, brands often struggle with maintaining a genuine connection with their audience. What do you see as the biggest challenge for brands in the digital space, and how can they overcome it?

Mayoor Shah: The digital space is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it offers unprecedented reach and engagement opportunities, but on the other, it can sometimes dilute the brand’s unique voice amid the noise. The biggest challenge is staying authentic while keeping pace with the rapid evolution of technology and consumer expectations. Many brands focus too much on trends rather than building a deep, meaningful connection with their audience. The solution lies in storytelling, crafting narratives that resonate on an emotional level and showcase the brand’s core values. At Reflections, we’ve always believed in the power of narrative. Our work isn’t just about producing content; it’s about telling stories that reflect the brand’s identity and speak to the audience’s aspirations. By investing in quality content and leveraging emerging technologies thoughtfully, brands can create a lasting impact.

TheCconnects: That’s a fascinating perspective. Transitioning from challenges to solutions, could you elaborate on how Reflections’ products and services address your customers’ pain points, especially in such a rapidly changing industry?

Mayoor Shah: Certainly. At Reflections, our mission has always been to understand our clients’ unique challenges and craft bespoke solutions. We started by pioneering corporate films at a time when this was a novel idea in India. Our approach is centered on empathy, listening to our clients and comprehending their brand’s narrative. For instance, when a client struggles to differentiate themselves in a saturated market, we create visually compelling stories that highlight their unique strengths. In the digital realm, our focus is on creating content that is not only engaging but also technically robust, ensuring that it meets the latest standards of quality and accessibility. Whether it’s a live-streamed event or an award-winning feature film, our solutions are designed to be versatile, innovative, and aligned with the clients’ long-term vision.

TheCconnects: Your approach to addressing customer challenges is both thoughtful and strategic. Shifting gears a bit, what do you enjoy doing in your free time? It’s always intriguing to learn about the passions that fuel creative minds.

Mayoor Shah: When I’m not immersed in my work, I have a wide range of interests that keep me inspired. I’m an avid painter and have a deep passion for fashion design, which has been a lifelong pursuit. I also enjoy writing poetry and short stories; these creative outlets allow me to express emotions in a more personal and reflective manner. Music, especially playing the sitar, is another cherished pastime. It’s a wonderful way to unwind and connect with my cultural roots. Additionally, I relish the opportunity to mentor young talents and share my experiences at various academic institutions. It’s incredibly fulfilling to see budding creatives find their path in this industry.

TheCconnects: It’s wonderful to see how you balance such diverse interests. With such a dynamic career and life, what advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs, especially those looking to carve a niche in creative and digital media?

Mayoor Shah: My advice would be to embrace curiosity and never stop learning. The media landscape is ever-changing, and what works today might evolve tomorrow. Always be ready to adapt and innovate. Understand your audience deeply, listen to their needs and create solutions that are not just trendy, but truly meaningful. Also, build a strong network; collaboration often leads to the most creative breakthroughs. Lastly, remain persistent. There will be setbacks and challenges along the way, but each experience offers a lesson. Trust your vision, invest in your passion, and don’t be afraid to take calculated risks.

TheCconnects: You’ve shared incredible insights into your professional and creative journey. Now, could you tell us about your writing and literary contributions?

Mayoor Shah: Certainly. I am a regular contributor to Chic Magazine and Malayalam Manorama, where I write articles that explore culture, creativity, and personal development. I have also authored three inspirational books aimed at motivating youth, especially in rural areas:

  • A Life Handpicked – A memoir on actor Harshvardhan Rane
  • Sthitapragya – A memoir on Ashish Chauhan, former MD & CEO of the Bombay Stock Exchange
  • Hidden Love (ongoing) – A memoir on Hilag Goswami, the 15th-generation direct disciple of Shri Vallabhacharya of the Sanatan Dharma, Pushti Marg

These works are crafted to show that dreams are achievable and nothing is impossible, providing real-life examples of perseverance and success.

TheCconnects: Impressive literary achievements! Alongside these, you’ve received numerous awards and honors. Could you share some of the most significant recognitions you’ve earned?

Mayoor Shah: I’ve been honored to receive several awards throughout my career, including:

  • Lifetime Achievement Award for contributions to Creative Arts, conferred by the Suryadatta Group of Institutes, Pune
  • Honorary Doctorate in Creative Arts from Frankford International University
  • Cross Media Excellence Award, recognizing excellence across audio, video, television, print, stage, and cinema
  • World Book Record for outstanding achievement in Creative Arts

Each of these honors holds a special place for me, as they reflect the collective effort of my team and the support of my mentors and collaborators.

TheCconnects: Before we wrap up, could you share a memorable moment or a project that has left a lasting impression on you throughout your career?

Mayoor Shah: One project that stands out is our early venture into live-streaming surgeries. It was groundbreaking at the time, and it showcased how technology could be leveraged to bring critical, real-world experiences to a wider audience. I remember the initial skepticism and the numerous challenges we faced, from technical glitches to ensuring the privacy and security of patient data. But once we succeeded, it not only revolutionized how medical procedures were shared but also built a bridge between technology and healthcare. It remains a vivid reminder of how innovative thinking and perseverance can create impactful change.

TheCconnects: Thank you so much for sharing your story and insights with us today, Mayoor. We wish you continued success in all your endeavors.

Mayoor Shah: Thank you, TheCconnects. It was a pleasure discussing my journey, and I hope my experiences can inspire others to pursue their creative passions and push the boundaries of what’s possible. The key is to stay true to oneself and always look for opportunities to learn and grow.
