Advocate Dr. P.O. Kuriyakose Thengumvila, Senior Lawyer, Judicial Member of the Trivandrum District Legal Service Authority, Environmentalist, and Humanitarian | Exclusive Interview

In a world where professional specialization often confines individuals to a single track, Advocate Dr. P.O. Kuriyakose Thengumvila stands as a towering exception. With a vibrant career spanning 38 years, Dr. Kuriyakose is not just a senior lawyer navigating the complex corridors of the Kerala High Court; he is a passionate environmentalist, an agricultural visionary, and an unwavering humanitarian.

His journey is one of profound resilience. Rising from the remote, electricity-deprived village of Manjappara to earning a Ph.D. in Legal Studies from Cambridge Digital University, USA in 2025, his life is a testament to the power of grit. Today, at 65, he holds an astonishing array of global accolades, including the Bharath Ratna Iconic Achievers Award 2026, the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Seva Ratna Samman 2026, and features in both the USA and London Books of World Records.

TheCconnects recently sat down with this multifaceted legal luminary to discuss his extraordinary roots, the intersection of law and environmental sustainability, and the secret to thriving on just four hours of sleep a night.

TheCconnects: Dr. Kuriyakose Thengumvila, it is an absolute honor to speak with you. Your professional journey spans nearly four decades, crossing into law, sociology, and agribusiness. Could you take our readers back to the beginning? How did a young boy from a remote village build such an expansive career?

Adv. Dr. P.O. Kuriyakose Thengumvila: Thank you for having me. To understand my journey, you have to understand where I came from. I was born and raised in an average agriculture-based family in Manjappara, Ayoor-a very remote village in the Kollam District. During my childhood, there were no proper roads, no vehicles, and certainly no electricity. Everything I studied up to my B.Sc. and LL.B. was done through immense hardship.

Before I entered the legal profession, I worked for five years as a teacher, a sales executive, and a project officer just to support myself. I started my practice as a junior lawyer in Kottarakkara, and gradually extended my work to Trivandrum and the High Court of Kerala in Ernakulam, eventually settling in the capital in 2007. It wasn’t a straight path, but an ardent desire to learn and uplift my community pushed me forward. Everything I have achieved is purely by God’s grace and relentless hard work.

TheCconnects: You’ve achieved so much against incredible odds. Who has influenced you the most in your life and why?

Adv. Dr. P.O. Kuriyakose Thengumvila: My greatest influences are my parents and my agricultural roots. My father, O. Yohannan, instilled in me the value of honest, back-breaking labor. Growing up close to the soil taught me patience and resilience-qualities that are absolutely vital in the courtroom.

Later in life, my family became my greatest pillar of strength. My wife, a retired Higher Secondary School teacher, my daughter, who is an MBBS doctor, and my son, an MBA graduate-they have all been incredibly supportive of my unconventional, non-stop lifestyle. Their understanding allows me to dedicate myself fully to my clients and my social causes.

TheCconnects: Operating at the highest levels of law, agriculture, and social work must be demanding. What are the biggest challenges you face today, and how do you overcome them?

Adv. Dr. P.O. Kuriyakose Thengumvila: Time and physical endurance are my greatest challenges. Even at 65, with 38 years of practice behind me, my days are incredibly long. I sleep for only four hours a night. I still personally drive 150 kilometers to appear for cases in Kottarakkara.

How do I overcome it? Through sheer passion. When you treat your work not as a burden but as a duty to society, the physical exhaustion fades. Whether I am fighting a civil dispute, managing an agricultural project, or advocating for environmental protection, the fire to make a difference keeps me awake and alert.

TheCconnects: We live in a highly digitized world today. From your perspective as a senior lawyer and a social advocate, what do you see as the biggest challenge for brands and professionals in the digital space?

Adv. Dr. P.O. Kuriyakose Thengumvila: The biggest challenge in the digital space is maintaining authenticity and ethical integrity. Today, anyone can build a digital brand overnight, but trust cannot be coded or bought; it must be earned.

For legal professionals and social organizations, the digital world is a double-edged sword. It allows us to spread awareness about human rights and environmental protection globally-which is how my work reached platforms like the London and USA Books of World Records. But simultaneously, the digital space is flooded with misinformation. The challenge is to ensure that your digital presence reflects genuine, ground-level action. People are looking for real empathy, not just curated online profiles.

TheCconnects: You are uniquely known as a “Legal Eagle with a Green Heart.” How does your specific blend of legal expertise and environmental advocacy address the pain points of the people you serve?

Adv. Dr. P.O. Kuriyakose Thengumvila: People often come to a lawyer when they are in distress-facing property disputes, family crises, or labor issues. They need someone who understands the letter of the law but also the human condition.

Because I have degrees in Zoology, Labour Laws, and Agribusiness Management, I approach my clients’ pain points holistically. If an agricultural community is facing illegal land encroachment, I don’t just see a property dispute; I see an environmental threat and a threat to their livelihood. My clients benefit from this empathy. I use legal frameworks not just to win cases, but to enforce policies that safeguard our natural world. We provide solutions that restore peace to the individual while ensuring sustainable practices for the community.

TheCconnects: Looking back at your illustrious career and your recent 2026 accolades like the PadmaShree Global Excellence Award, what is the most profound lesson you have learned?

Adv. Dr. P.O. Kuriyakose Thengumvila: My core philosophy, which I have learned through decades of practice, is this: “Justice is not just a legal matter; it is about ensuring that our actions today pave the way for a better, greener tomorrow.” True justice extends beyond the verdict of a judge. If we win a corporate lawsuit but destroy a river in the process, we have failed as a society. True success is multi-dimensional. It requires integrity, a social conscience, and an unwavering commitment to the future generations.

TheCconnects: With your demanding schedule and long drives, do you ever have free time? What do you do to unwind?

Adv. Dr. P.O. Kuriyakose Thengumvila: My free time is woven into my passions. Since my youth, art, literature, and agriculture have been my hobbies. Today, they are extensions of my career. Cultivating social forestry, managing agricultural projects, and reading literature are how I recharge. To me, planting a tree or studying agricultural management is the ultimate relaxation. It keeps me rooted to the earth after a stressful day of legal arguments.

TheCconnects: Finally, what advice do you have for aspiring legal professionals and social entrepreneurs trying to make their mark today?

Adv. Dr. P.O. Kuriyakose Thengumvila: Do not confine yourself to a single path. Read widely, study different disciplines, and never forget where you came from. If a boy from a remote village without electricity can reach the High Court and earn international doctorates, your potential is limitless. Prioritize integrity, fight for justice with a social conscience, and always remember to protect the environment that sustains us. Hard work, guided by a higher purpose, will always lead you to greatness.
