Welcome, Ramesh! It is a distinct honor to host a stalwart of technical communication today. With a career spanning nearly four decades and leadership roles across more than 15 Fortune 100 enterprises-including IBM, Veritas, Symantec, HCL, and Reltio-you have quite literally shaped the technical writing industry in India. You hold the prestigious title of STC Fellow, the highest global honor in this profession, and in 2023, you formally incorporated Tech Write Pro to elevate the entire technical communication landscape. Given your relentless dedication to mentoring, coaching, and simplifying the complex, we are thrilled to dive into your journey. How are you doing, and what is the current energy like at Tech Write Pro?
Ramesh Aiyyangar: Thank you for the incredibly warm welcome. It is a pleasure to connect with TheCconnects. I am doing very well. The energy at Tech Write Pro is vibrant and deeply purpose-driven. We are currently focused heavily on bridging the gap between traditional documentation and the rapidly evolving AI ecosystem. Our online training programs, webinars, and community discussions are buzzing with technical communicators eager to upskill. We operate on the principle of minimalism-keeping things simple and effective-and seeing that philosophy resonate with thousands of practitioners keeps me highly energized.
TheCconnects: Your professional journey is monumental. You have spent over 35 years in the industry and over 15 years in senior leadership roles. Can you tell our readers how this extensive corporate journey culminated in the founding of Tech Write Pro?
Ramesh Aiyyangar: My journey has been one of constant exploration and learning. Over the decades, working with companies like IBM, Apigee, Cisco, and Persistent Systems, I realized that technical communication is not just about writing manuals; it is about bringing joy and enriching lives by simplifying the complex.
Throughout my corporate tenure, I always had an intrinsic mission to empower others. In 2018, I founded the Institute for Technical Communicators of India (ITCI) as a free community platform. By 2023, I realized that to create a sustainable, large-scale impact, I needed to build a dedicated institution. That led to the incorporation of Tech Write Pro. It was born out of a desire to create a holistic ecosystem that offers expert-led documentation services while providing structured professional development and mentoring for writers at all stages of their careers.
TheCconnects: You describe your personal religion as “Minimalism. Less and only less” and refer to “ramesh” as the noun and “aiyyangar” as the verb describing the action of technical communication. Who or what has influenced this profound, minimalist approach to life and leadership?
Ramesh Aiyyangar: My greatest influence has been the craft of technical communication itself. When your daily job involves taking highly complex, convoluted engineering concepts and distilling them into clear, concise, and user-friendly information, it naturally alters how you view the world. You begin to strip away the unnecessary.
In leadership, I deeply value servant leadership. The leaders who influenced me most were those who empowered their teams silently, without ego. Minimalism in leadership means removing obstacles for your team rather than micro-managing them. I realized early on that I am paid for what I learn, and the best way to utilize that learning is to keep it short and simple-be it in writing or in living.
TheCconnects: In 2019, you were named a Fellow of the Society for Technical Communication (STC), the profession’s most distinguished global honor. You also created the unique Technical Communicators Mentoring Program (TCMP) in 2020. What are the biggest challenges you see young technical writers facing today, and how does your mentoring help them overcome these hurdles?
Ramesh Aiyyangar: The biggest challenge for young technical communicators today is the sheer velocity of technological change and the resulting imposter syndrome. They are expected to understand cloud architectures, API structures, and now AI algorithms, all while mastering content strategy and user experience.
When I created the TCMP, the goal was to address this overwhelm. The mentoring program provides a safe, structured space where mentees can seek guidance without the pressure of a corporate hierarchy. I help them overcome challenges by teaching them to focus on the fundamentals: audience analysis, logical structuring, and clarity. Technology is just a tool; the core skill is empathy for the end-user. By grounding them in these basics, we simplify their career decisions and build unshakeable confidence.
TheCconnects: As the IT sector undergoes a seismic transformation driven by Artificial Intelligence, how is Tech Write Pro pioneering the integration of AI into technical communication?
Ramesh Aiyyangar: We proactively placed AI at the forefront of our educational curriculum. There is a lot of anxiety in the industry about AI replacing writers. At Tech Write Pro, our philosophy is that AI will not replace technical communicators; but technical communicators who use AI will replace those who do not.
We conduct specialized training programs to help practitioners seamlessly integrate AI into their documentation workflows. We teach them how to use generative AI for drafting, content structuring, and predictive analytics, while retaining human oversight for empathy, ethics, and contextual accuracy. We are equipping professionals to evolve intelligently alongside AI rather than fearing it.
TheCconnects: What do you see as the biggest challenge for global brands in the digital space today regarding their technical content?
Ramesh Aiyyangar: The biggest challenge is maintaining authenticity and clarity in an era of content overload. Brands are churning out massive volumes of digital content, but much of it lacks structural integrity and user-centricity. Customers today do not have the patience to read through dense, jargon-heavy manuals. If your product documentation is frustrating, the customer’s perception of your brand plummets. The challenge for brands is to view technical communication not as an afterthought or a cost center, but as a critical component of the customer experience and brand loyalty.
TheCconnects: You have built a fully bootstrapped, proprietary enterprise that has amassed thousands of community members and hosted dozens of events with minimal participation fees. How does Tech Write Pro balance purpose-driven community building with business sustainability?
Ramesh Aiyyangar: It comes down to anchoring the organization in core values: respect, commitment, ethics, and transparent communication. Behavior must be intrinsically driven by values rather than external directives. We keep our educational events accessible because the primary goal is to elevate the profession.
Business sustainability comes through our expert-led documentation services for B2B clients and through institutional sponsorships for our offline programs. Companies like PayU, Whatfix, and Digital.ai have sponsored our endeavors because they recognize the value of a highly skilled technical communication workforce. When you build trust and credibility within a community, commercial sustainability follows organically.
TheCconnects: In 2023, you were conferred the Glory of India Award by the Indian Achievers Forum for your contribution to nation-building. Outside of this monumental professional dedication, what does Ramesh Aiyyangar do in his free time?
Ramesh Aiyyangar: My passion is playing with words and making a difference. Even in my free time, I am constantly exploring and learning. I read extensively about human behavior, technology trends, and philosophy. I spend time reflecting on how to simplify my own life further. I often say that I need to learn more to discover myself-and to forget “ME.” Beyond that, I enjoy engaging with the community, listening to the career aspirations of young professionals, and finding new ways to bring joy to the technical communication fraternity.
TheCconnects: To conclude this highly insightful conversation, what is your ultimate advice for aspiring entrepreneurs and young professionals in India today?
Ramesh Aiyyangar: My counsel to the next generation is simple: become entrepreneurs and create jobs instead of waiting for jobs. We have a highly conducive environment in India right now, and the MSME sector provides incredible support and infrastructure. Do not let the fear of failure hold you back. Anchor your enterprise in strong ethics, focus on solving a genuine problem, and keep your solutions simple. Elevate your profession, empower those around you, and let your values drive your behavior.
TheCconnects: That is profound and immensely actionable advice. Thank you so much for joining us today, Ramesh. It has been an absolute privilege to explore your legacy, your minimalist philosophy, and your visionary work with Tech Write Pro. We wish you continued success in empowering the next generation of technical communicators!
Ramesh Aiyyangar: Thank you very much. The pleasure was entirely mine.
